Research and Development

The Assistant President for Scientific Research

The Office of the Assistant President for Scientific Research and Development is responsible for the promotion and advancement of research across the FU Sudan community and serves the community in a variety of ways. Specifically, we are responsible to:

  • Follow-up the implementation of the scientific research and development plans in coordination with the various faculties and centers in the University;
  • Propose the polices concerning the scientific research and its needs, and present the same to the Council of scientific research
  • Provide the necessary facilities to scientific research in co-operation and coordination with the competent bodies in the University
  • Present annual report concerning the scientific research in the University to the President
  • Carry out any other functions entrusted thereto by the President.
  • To-date, a Scientific Research Strategic Plan for 2011-2020 is being finalized for presentation to our benefactors and the community.

Activities

Workshops in Writing Research Proposals and Scientific Research – We invited senior faculty to share their knowledge and experience in order to raise interest amongst FU faculty and staff for engaging in scientific research as well as to provide skills to seek support for pursuing their own research ideas.

R&D Proposal Development

We are continually encouraging faculty and staff to develop and submit R&D proposals for local and international funding. Some exam-ples of recent success:

  • Dr. Faisal M. Fadlelmola (Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science) was funded 15,000 Canadian Dollars by the Centre for International Governance Innovation to conduct a project entitled “Assessment of the cancer registries, cancer epidemiology and cancer genomics in East Africa” for six months (September 2011 to January 2012). The area of the study included Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Sudan. Dr. Fadlelmola spent two weeks in each of these countries (September 9 to October 26 2011) to conduct field research, surveying cancer registries in these five countries. The findings of the field research were written into a discussion paper and a policy brief that were sub-mitted to the Africa Initiative Discussion Papers Series on January 31 th 2012.
  • The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) based in Trieste, Italy approved a proposal submitted by Prof. Pascual for a capacity building workshop on the use of GIS and remote sensing applications. The workshop focused on using the SWAT model interface to GIS and the funding came from the TWAS GRANTS FOR SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS HELD IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. The TWAS will provide 4,000 Euro for the air tickets of participants/lecturers.
